District Overview

District is situated in the south-eastern part of Karnataka which is spread across 5 taluks – Kolar, Bangarpet, Srinivaspura, Malur and Mulabagilu. Popularly known as the “Golden Land” of India-due to the presence of Kolar Gold fields. It is ranked No.1 in productivity and yield of horticultural crops.

Economic Profile

  • The total Gross District Domestic Product (GDDP) of the district estimated during the year 2012-13 is Rs. 6,182 crore.
  • In the year 2012-13, the per capita annual income of the district was Rs.59,614.

Industrial profile

  • District has a vibrant agricultural base, making it ideal destination for food processing and agro based industries.
  • Improving ground water conditions by rain water harvesting and proper management of tanks will improve agricultural yield.
  • Developing Kolar into a food processing industrial zone by generating alternate rural employment opportunities.
  • Kolar is ranked as No.1 in productivity and yield of horticultural crops by the Government.
  • Cocoon productivity in Kolar is 900 kg/ha, this is higher than the state average of 601 kg/ha.
  • Average annual income generated by Sericulture in the district is US $ 33.40 million.  

Cold Storages

  • 8 cold storages for Potatoes, 2 for tamarind and 1 cold storage for multipurpose.
  • An Operational Food park at Melur across 87 acres comprising of commercial complex, incubation centre, testing laboratory, water treatment plant, common effluent treatment plant, warehousing, cold storage and generators.

Agri and Allied Sectors

  • Kolar is an emerging hub for Agro and food processing industries - vibrant agricultural base in the district.
  •  District average of milk production is 7.65 litres/day as compared to state average of 5.83 litres/day.
  • Expansion of Mulberry cultivated area and introduction of varieties like V1 and S36 has boosted production and yield.
  • Kolar has a horticulture college to improve knowledge and provide support to horticultural farmers
